Qanoun: This is a plectra plucked
Psaltery
having up to 100
strings. The back sounding board was held to the players chest as the hands
wrapped around to pluck its strings. Today the qanoun and other members of the
Psaltery family are placed across the players knees or
on a small table.
Quartal Harmony:
Harmony
based on the interval of a
perfect
fourth, rather than on
thirds.
Quartfagott: This
bassoon is
pitched a
fourth
below or above the normal bassoon.
Quarter note/rest: A
note/rest one half
the length of a half note and one quarter the length of a whole
note.
Quartet: A piece
for four instruments or voices. Four performers.
Quasi: (Ita) Almost. Used with other terms,
e.g. quasi madrigal, almost or as if a
madrigal.
Quinfagott: This
bassoon is
pitched a
fifth
below or above the normal
bassoon.
Quintal Harmony:
Harmony based on the
interval of a
fifth, rather than
thirds.
Quintet: A piece for five
instruments or
voices. Five performers.
